Cardiff City Ladies host Raglan Juniors

The Raglan flag on show at Newport Stadium

Several Raglan JFC teams made their way to a cold, but fun-filled, Newport Stadium last Sunday to celebrate St David’s Day with Cardiff City Ladies Football Club. The club which helped launch the careers of several Welsh internationals, including superstar Jess Fishlock, hosted several south Wales clubs on the day of their crunch match with top of the table Portsmouth.

Girls’ teams from Under 9 through to Under 12 were joined by the Under 8 mixed team to parade around a full-capacity Newport Stadium at half time, waving the Raglan flag.

City are rebranding next season as Gwalia United to reflect the fact they’re the only Welsh team in the English league pyramid, along with a huge sponsorship deal with GoCompare. Their long-term aim is reaching the Women’s Super League and have a Welsh team competing week in week out against the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool.

As well as the chance to see the match, the girls had an opportunity to get training from first-team regulars Thierry-Jo Gauvain and Ruby Scahill (pictured below).
