Raglan women take flight

Tuesday nights are football nights at Raglan!

Raglan JFC is taking its next step as a club, with a women’s team for the 2024/25 season.

The club already offers football for players from 6 to 17, but there’s never been a women’s team… til now!

Women’s football is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and whether you’ve played before, or are looking to get fit or try a new sport the club will welcome you with open arms.

From June 25th the club will be hosting training sessions for women aged 16 and over on Tuesday nights, between 5.45 and 7, with the clubhouse open for drinks and snacks.

After coming through the ranks at the club, this year’s Under 17’s are looking to move up to senior football, and having won their league and played the likes of Swansea City in recent years, you’ll be in good company as the club enters the South Wales Women and Girls League.

From tiny acorns…

2016 and all that…

Raglan has had a football club in some form or another since the early 1900’s, but the club as it exists now plays at Raglan sports field with the highest number of players in recent memory.

Our girls section started as the Raglan Doves in 2016, thanks to the dedication of coaches Andrew Kennedy, and later Bill Parry.

In the years since, football has given those girls many opportunities and success on and off the pitch, with the Under 17’s winning their league in 2022, and this season facing the biggest academy teams in Wales, including Swansea City, Barry Town and Cardiff Met.

Champions 2022: Winning at life… and football!

As well as coaching younger children and volunteering on match days, girls such as Alyssa Williams, who was there when the Doves started in 2016, have used football as part of their academic qualifications.

Most recently Under 17’s player Milly George conducted research into the link between female footballers and ACL injuries – knowledge of which is still developing – and made a presentation to coaches and parents at the club on possible causes and actions everyone can take.

Following that presentation, the club has arranged a discount for female-specific football boots through international brand IDA Sports. Members can have 10% off if you use our club code – WOMENSFC10

To facilitate our new team we’re lucky to be supported by our new sponsors the Gwent Cardiac Rehab Trust Fund, a charity dedicated to supporting patients who have suffered heart attacks, heart failure and cardiac surgery throughout Gwent.

Brian Begg, chairman of the Gwent Cardiac Rehab Trust, said they’re “thrilled to announce our sponsorship of this brand new team. As a charity focused on raising funds for individuals affected by heart problems, we believe in promoting physical activity and movement for a healthier lifestyle and you can’t beat playing a team sport in a welcoming environment like Raglan.”

The club will be returning the favour by raising funds and awareness for the charity during an action week in February where we will look to fundraise and hosting other activities, so please look out for that closer to the time.

Younger Raglan players in their Unison sponsored bibs

The club is also grateful for the long term support of previous sponsors Aneurin Bevan branch of Unison, who have supported all of our girls’ teams through recurring donations and support.

Most recently the club was able to buy every girls’ team in the club training bibs and balls with sponsorship from the union.
